MODERNITY AND THE ART OF TATTOOS
Tattoo is a form of body modification where a design is made by inserting ink, dyes and pigments, either indelible or temporary, into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. The art of making tattoos is called tattooing.
Tattoos have historically been regarded in the west as uncivilized and over the last 100 years the fashion has been associated with mainly with sailors, sailors, working men and criminals. By the end of 20th century many Western stigmas of the tattoo culture had been dismissed and the practice has become more acceptable and accessible for people for all trades and levels of society.
Tattoos falls into three broad categories: purely decorative, symbolic and pictorial. The word tattoo in the 18th century is a loanword from a Samoan word tatau, meaning “to strike”

The American Academy of Dermatology distinguishes five types of tattoos. The traumatic tattoos or natural tattoos results from injuries or some kind of accident. These are difficult to remove as they tend to spread across several layers of the skin.
Identification tattoos have been used identifying criminals or slaves. In the 21st century people tattoo their names on their body primarily for the purpose of been found when gone missing. There are cosmetic surgery industries all over the world that do permanent makeup tattooing to enhance the face.
Functional tattoos are to help patients in aiding their medication. Research conducted shows the Nazi in Germany tattooed their body based on the type of blood group one has during the World War II. Tattoos are used in ancient medicine as part of the treatment of a patient.
Since 1970, tattoos have become a mainstream as part of Western fashion, common among all genders, economic classes and age groups. Tattoos have taken a different meaning from previous generations and has undergone dramatic redefinition of deviance to an acceptable form of expression.

In the 21st century people use tattoos for marketing and advertising, with companies paying people to have their logo’s tattooed on their bodies. Effects of tattoos vary from person to person depending on the type of ink and dyes one use. Tattoos have health risks on an individual which can lead to the development of cancer, stroke as a result of blood clothing during the process of tattooing. People believe that the Law giving to the Israelites concerning tattooing is outdated and only applied to the Israelites and not the gentiles. People tattoo based on religious reasons.
